In an exciting, ever-changing world, connect the global to the local
The world is changing and the English language is being used increasingly as a lingua franca (共通語). As a result, many varieties of English are emerging and communication in English often does NOT involve native speakers. It is no longer enough to think that American and British ways of speaking or writing are the only ones that are important.
The world is full of surprises. You may find yourself communicating in English with someone from a country that you had never previously connected with the English language and you may discover something that truly changes you! Among the different varieties in the world, Japanese English is just one. Still, you own your English and the language is a valuable tool for communication that you can actually help to improve and refine.
English is increasingly becoming a tool for INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION. We, in the English Department, are committed to the idea of English as an international language. We want to help you to connect meaningfully with ideas and people that will broaden and develop your own way of thinking and your own personality. You will then be in a position to help others to make meaningful and beneficial changes in their own local situation. While we have a special interest in helping to develop the teachers of the future, teachers are just one example of people who can use new exciting ideas and experiences to help renew and improve their local situation.
The key is serious study and careful research combined with the curiosity to come up with new ideas and new solutions. Let’s work together to improve our powers of research and communication so that we can make a real contribution in a changing world.
